2011 Quilt Block Contest fabric selected!
Hello from Susan, the 2011 Quilt Block Contest coordinator. I have been working for the Quilt Show for 5 years now, mainly in the show office, and I asked to be in the charge of the “QBC” this year as well. In 2010, our fabrics for the QBC were black and white, with one additional color. We had the most entries ever! We know our selections for 2011 will have to be equally inspiring, and unlike anything we’ve done before.
By the way, all the fabrics for this contest are donated by Westminster Fibers, one of our sponsors, which is absolutely fabulous of them. They have so much fabric to choose from! We have to select the fabrics in November so that images of them can be put in the Quilters Affair flier that comes out at the end of December.
So, last week Ann and I went to the Stitchin’ Post quilt shop in Sisters to select the six fabrics for this contest. We finally settled on a great print to be our main theme fabric, and then needed to select some accent colors. The shop had quite a few good options from Westminster on hand, and we had also had several sample cards that have lots of swatches. I felt like a kid in a candy store, and wanted it all! Fortunately, Jean Wells herself was available to help us with the selections. She has such a good eye for color and texture, and she knew right away what was needed: a stripe, three tone-on-tone solids with great textures, and another large print. Here I am with Jean looking at all the choices.
Soon we’ll have images of the fabrics to post on the show website and our Facebook page, but here’s a taste of what we chose for our theme fabric: Round-A-Bout in red, by Kaffe Fassett for Liberty Art Fabrics (Mayfair collection). You can just see it under my right hand. It has loads of colors in it, and lots of flowers, paisley shapes and circles. We all love it. We can’t wait to show you all the coordinating fabrics too, and hope to get lots and lots of entries for the 2011 Quilt Block Contest!
